Changes what the coach says, not how the AI plays. After a mistake the coach keeps its move to itself: try again, or ask for the answer. Win and the next game is a level up; lose and it's a level down. Letter keys like H (hint) and P (pass). Turn off if they get pressed by accident, say by speech input.

The rules in one minute

Players take turns placing a stone on an empty intersection. Stones never move.

Liberties are the empty points right next to a group (up, down, left, right). Stones next to each other in a line form one group and share liberties; stones touching only diagonally are not connected.

Capture: fill a group's last liberty and it's removed. A group with one liberty left is in atari.

No suicide: you can't play where your stone would have no liberties, unless that move captures.

Ko: if you just captured one stone, your opponent can't immediately recapture in a way that repeats the board. They must play elsewhere first.

End: when both players pass in a row. The coach marks the dead stones (click a group if you disagree), then counts: your score is your stones plus the empty points only you surround. This is Chinese (area) counting. White gets komi for moving second.

Life and death

A group is safe forever if it has two separate eyes (enclosed empty points). The opponent can't fill both, because playing into either one alone would be suicide.

A group with only one eye, or none, can eventually be surrounded and captured.

Turn on Territory to see which groups the coach thinks are dead. They get a small square.

Tips for 9×9
  • Start in the centre (E5) or on the 3-3 / 3-4 points (C3, C4, G7…). First-line moves are small early on.
  • Stay connected. On a small board, cut-apart groups die fast.
  • Before each move, look for groups in atari (yours and theirs).
  • Don't chase stones you can't capture. Build territory while you attack.
  • Capturing is nice, but the winner is whoever surrounds more area.
  • When in doubt, defend. With Chinese counting an extra stone inside your own area costs nothing, so make sure your groups are safe before you pass.
  • Pass only when no move gains anything: fill the neutral points between your area and your opponent's first, as each is worth a point. The coach warns you if you pass too early.
  • Unsure? Hover a point: the preview shows captures, ataris and your stone's liberties.
  • Stuck? Press Hint for the coach's best moves, or Their idea to see what your opponent is planning.
