The Eight Bit Passage - licence =============================== The Eight Bit Passage is a game by Christopher Night (Cosmologicon, team Universe Factory 18), made for PyWeek 18 (March 2014). This site serves the original entry from the PyWeek archive (version 2): https://s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/media.pyweek.org/18/unifac18/eightbitpassage-v2.tgz sha256 443763b98d98cca456f0e5604882517595d845c0c48bbbee6623913fce118590 (entry page: https://pyweek.org/e/unifac18/; retrieved 2026-11-04) The licence section of the README of that archive reads, exactly: "Source code and images are by Christopher Night. They are licensed CC0/WTFPL/whatever. Font is the Google Web Font "Trade Winds", distributed under Open Font License. See font/Trade_Winds/OFL.txt. Sound effects CC0, generated by SFXR [http://www.superflashbros.net/as3sfxr/] Music by Creative Sounds [http://creative-sound.org], distributed under CC-BY." The four music tracks are used unchanged and are credited here as the licence requires: Electro Dance (040 Action), Eyes and More (037 Action), Set Up the Time Machine Back to the 90's (022 Action) and The Trip to the German Heaven (034 Action), by Creative Sounds, Creative Commons Attribution (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ and the earlier versions of the same licence give the same attribution terms); the README lists the sources as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcDDduiDApI, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMJ6Zq7e6TI, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8UcrdQmabM and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDj5XxrIxzs. The version of the CC BY licence is not stated in the README. The font, Trade Winds (Copyright 2011, Sideshow, a DBA of Font Diner, Inc), is under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, reproduced at the end of this file. What this site serves: the eight-bit-passage.pgapp built by Builds/build-eight-bit-passage.sh from that archive, with the changes published as web.patch next to the source: the code was ported from Python 2 to Python 3 (2to3, integer division in the modules that did not import it from the future, a sort and a comparison function that no longer exist), the main loop became asynchronous (a pygbag requirement), Q in the pause menu starts over instead of quitting, the save file is written to /saves, the per-pixel noise on the images (the --lowres option of the original) is always on, and the game's run_game.py became main.py. The version 1 archive that came inside the tgz, the screenshots and the .pyw launcher were left out. No image, sound, music or font was altered. The game runs on pygame-ce (LGPL-2.1) and CPython 3.12 compiled by the pygbag project; their licences and source are on the site's Licenses page. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ README.txt (from the game) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Eight Bit Passage ===================== Entry in PyWeek #18 URL: https://pyweek.org/e/unifac18/ Team: Universe Factory 18 Members: Cosmologicon (Christopher Night) Dependencies ------------ This game was developed with Python 2.7.3 and Pygame 1.9.1. These can be downloaded at: https://www.python.org/download/releases/2.7.6/ http://www.pygame.org/download.shtml On Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install python python-pygame Running the Game ---------------- On Windows or Mac OS X, locate the "run_game.pyw" file and double-click it. Otherwise open a terminal / console and "cd" to the game directory and run: python run_game.py [flags] See below for available flags. Story ----- The New World, 1699 Spanish silver dollars, or pieces of eight, have become the first global currency. Vast hauls of silver are extracted from Spanish-controlled mines in South America, the largest treasure haul the world has ever seen. This is transported to the British West Indies and minted into dollars, known in English as eight bits. Hence galleons, heavily laden with pieces of eight, make their way north, through what is known as the Eight Bit Passage. On reaching the 32nd parallel, the prevailing westerlies grant them swift travels back to Europe. Ships traversing the Eight Bit Passage are ripe targets for piracy, and it's your job to keep the passage clear. The smooth functioning on the Spanish Empire, and indeed the entire world, depends on it.
