Pixel Quest - licence
=====================
Pixel Quest is an HTML5 game written by Cory Gackenheimer (2012) as an individual entry of the Liberated Pixel Cup 2012,
with the melonJS engine. The author published it on OpenGameArt (https://opengameart.org/content/pixel-quest, file
PixelQuest.zip, 4 MB; SHA-256 f512bbcb7a0952345cbfebc90319706d734a80db0a2326312239eeec61592fde); his repository is
https://github.com/cgack/libpx. Checked on 2026-11-06 from the zip itself.
What the package says (COPYING.txt and AUTHORS.txt, reproduced below in full):
- code: GNU General Public License, version 3 or (at your option) any later version;
- artwork, music and other assets: dual licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported and the GNU
General Public License, version 3 or later; AUTHORS.txt names the author of the assets;
- melonJS (melon.js, shipped as the author sent it): "Copyright (C) 2012, Olivier BIOT ... melonJS is licensed under the MIT
License" (header of the file); the Tween.js code it embeds is MIT.
Both main licences allow copying, modification and redistribution, including for commercial use, as long as the licence is kept,
the authors are credited (CC BY-SA) and the source is offered (GPL).
Two files are not in AUTHORS.txt: assets/metatiles32x32.png is the little sheet of collision markers ("Solid", "Platform", "SLSR",
"Ladder") that comes with the melonJS tutorials, used by the maps to mark where the player cannot walk (MIT, melonJS), and the
assets/lpc_home_cup.png and .gif pictures, the contest title picture co-authored by Lanea Zimmerman and Jonathan Palecek, which
we replaced (see below).
Full texts. The package of the game carries the complete legal texts: gpl-3.0.txt (GNU General Public License,
version 3) and cc-by-sa-3.0.txt (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported legal code), both in the folder of
the game on this site and in the source zip hosted beside it. COPYING.txt below is the statement of the author.
What this site serves: the game of the zip, as the author sent it (no minification), with these changes of ours
(pixel-quest.patch, pixel-quest-deletions.txt, the title picture and the build script, hosted with the source):
- the title screen no longer shows the Liberated Pixel Cup trophy: assets/lpc_home_cup.png (and the .gif, which the game does not
use) are not served, and assets/title.png is the same forest picture with the trophy and its pedestal painted over by copying
pixels of the picture itself (pixel-quest-make-title.py makes it; this adaptation of the CC BY-SA 3.0 picture by Lanea
Zimmerman and Jonathan Palecek is shared under the same licence);
- the text of the title screen "a Liberated Pixel Cup Game" reads "a free, open-source game", and the object the quest asks for,
"the Liberated Pixel Cup", is called "the Ancient Cup" in the messages (its picture, cup.png by Lanea Zimmerman, is unchanged);
- index.html has no white margin around the game;
- play.html (ours), which shows the game scaled to fit the player.
