VimMonsters Academy - licence ============================= VimMonsters Academy (https://github.com/error311/vimmonsters-academy), checked at commit b7a6ec492be7f8689d4ea1372a4b925e4bc4d7da (2026-04-26), is a browser game that teaches Vim motions through a creature-catching RPG. The repository carries one licence file, the MIT licence of "VimMonsters Academy contributors" (reproduced below), and the README says: "The project is released under the MIT License in LICENSE" and "VimMonsters Academy is an independent learning project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Vim". The git history has a single author (error311). Everything the game serves is in the repository and covered by that licence: the code, the sprites and interface pictures in assets/ (generated from the pixel data and palettes in src/content.js by scripts/build-bitmaps.mjs; no third-party artwork is mentioned anywhere in the repository), and the sound, which is synthesised by the browser's Web Audio code in src/audio.js (no audio files). The game uses no fonts file and no library. This site mentions Vim only by name, to say what the game teaches; it is not affiliated with the Vim project. WHAT THIS BUILD CHANGES The original game can talk to a small Node server (server.js: public leaderboard and a competition API; requests to ./api/leaderboard, ./api/run/start, ./api/run/submit and ./api/run/rename). That server, the tests, the scripts and the development files are not served, and src/game-run-runtime.js is changed so that those four calls are not made: each run starts from a local seed and the finished runs stay in the leaderboard of the player's browser (local storage). src/bitmap-assets.js loads the pictures from ./assets/ instead of ../assets/ (the original only worked with the page at the root of a site). play.html (ours) shows the game in the player of the site (it hides the page header and footer and fits the canvas to the box). index.html only gains a Content-Security-Policy that blocks any request outside the folder of the game. The rest is the author's files as published. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ LICENSE of the repository (original text) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MIT License Copyright (c) 2026 VimMonsters Academy contributors Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions: The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software.
