The Wizard's Data - licence =========================== The Wizard's Data is a platform puzzle game by Team Chimera (mit-mit and Lucid Design Art), made for PyWeek 20 (March 2015). This site serves the original entry from the PyWeek archive: https://s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/media.pyweek.org/20/mitmit20/thewizardsdata_pyweek20.zip sha256 86eceeef72933a2d0ffac1ba2c4a9c6785c50b3d2315582155cb5bd2a458d4d1 (entry page: https://pyweek.org/e/mitmit20/; retrieved 2026-11-04) The licence sentence in the README of that zip reads, exactly: "Licence: All of the artwork and code for this game (excepting those listed below) is CC0 (free to use in whatever manner you see fit, attribution not required)" The exceptions it lists, reproduced in the README below, are: the font "Celtic Bit" by Mirz123 (Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives; NOT used here, see below); "Pippin the Hunchback" by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com), Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/), used unchanged; "Acid Burn Sounds" by Mikhog/Michael Baradari, "Electrocution" by Jameswrowles (https://www.freesound.org/people/jameswrowles/sounds/248251/) and "Button and Switches" by FreqMan (https://www.freesound.org/people/FreqMan/sounds/31589/), all CC BY 3.0, used unchanged; and "Squeaky Rat" by qubodup (CC0). The game's own bitmap font, broddmin_5x10_shad_2x.png, is the one the same authors credit in their other games as derived from "Broddmin 5x10" by capbros (CC0); this README does not repeat that credit. Replacement of the Celtic Bit lettering: three images of the original baked in text typeset in Celtic Bit (the title screen, the "Paused" heading and the controls list of the pause screen). Because that font's licence does not allow modified versions, this site does not serve them; they were redrawn with fonts under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 (https://openfontlicense.org), keeping the rest of each picture pixel for pixel: Jacquard 24 (title) and Jacquard 12 ("Paused"), Copyright 2023 The Soft Type Project Authors (https://github.com/scfried/soft-type-jacquard), and Jersey 10 (controls list), Copyright 2023 The Soft Type Project Authors (https://github.com/scfried/soft-type-jersey), taken from https://github.com/google/fonts at commit 9862abc066c9b83bf84c3e8ed1fc2d8d48f9bbf0. The font files are not part of the game (only the rendered letters in three PNG images), and the images and the script that draws them are published with the other sources. The OFL text of those fonts is reproduced at the end of this file. The images are released under CC0 like the rest of the artwork. What this site serves: the wizards-data.pgapp built by Builds/build-wizards-data.sh from that zip, with the changes published as web.patch next to the source: the code was ported from Python 2 to Python 3 (integer division, xrange), the main loop became asynchronous (a pygbag requirement), the Quit buttons of the title screen do nothing, progress is written to /saves, and the game's main.py became src/wd_main.py; plus the three redrawn images. No other artwork, sound or music was altered. The game runs on pygame-ce (LGPL-2.1) and CPython 3.12 compiled by the pygbag project; their licences and source are on the site's Licenses page. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ README.txt (from the game) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ======================== The Wizard's Data ======================== PyWeek 20 Entry for theme "One Room" (https://pyweek.org/19/) Team entry by "Team Chimera" (mit-mit and Lucid Design Art) ============= Requirements: ============= Python 2.5+ (tested on 2.7.6, should work on earlier versions): http://www.python.org/ Pygame 1.9+: http://www.pygame.org/ ================= Running the game: ================= Open a terminal/console/shell, "cd" to the game directory and run the command python run_game.py ================ Playing the game ================ Background Story: The great dragon slept while Otrux the wizard collected his data on the beast; how often it slept, the length of its claws and the temperature of its breath. So it had been night after night for the last three years, ever since the beast had descended upon the kingdom of Arvendon, and made the King’s treasure room it’s resting place. The kingdom had been the most prosperous in the lands in it`s former glory days. But without it`s treasure, the kingdom had declined. The king placed a heft bounty on the beast`s head .. many a knight would come to challenge the dragon, but all in vain. Otrux would observe such encounters carefully .. as limb was torn from limb and flesh melted and scorched, Otrux would observe something useful, something he hadn`t seen the dragon do before, refine his knowledge on previously measured phenomena. Everything was recorded, every minutiae .. something would prove useful. Otrux constructed as vast mechanical device, a system of great gears and pulleys, clocks and counters, a “computational engine”, he called it. Night after night Otrux fed his data into the machine. The gears turned and clocks ticked; the machine searched tirelessly for something, a pattern in the measurements that would hold the key to defeating the dragon and ridding the kingdom of its menace. After three years, the clocks of the computational engine stopped and a chime rang out from within. This was the moment Otrux had been waiting for. The measurements had been analysed and an answer had been found. Finally the kingdom could rest again. But on the eve Otrux`s announcement, time finally caught up with him, and he died of old age. The wizard`s data was lost inside the vast mechanical dungeon below the central control panel, the working components of his machine. As Otrux`s humble apprentice, the job of finding Otrux`s missing data and the answer to the problem of the dragon falls to you. All of Otrux`s data was recorded on three scrolls which were lost in the depths of his machine. Once these are recovered and input the computer, the dragon riddle will be solved.
