About the game
13TH GUY is a foot race with a crowd. Forty runners, you among them, line up on a grassy field, a countdown circle shrinks from red to yellow to green, and then everyone sprints at the same time. Nobody plays fair: the runners bump, shove and block each other, and a clean line through the pack is worth more than raw speed.
The twist is the elimination rule. Each round, the last 13 runners to cross the line are out. Forty racers become 27 in the first round, 27 become 14 in the second, and in the third and last race the 14 left fight for a single win. The top of the screen counts how many places you have, how many runners have already qualified and how many have been eliminated. If you end up the 13th guy, or one of the last ones, your run is over and a single press of Enter sends you back to the starting line.
The game was made for js13kGames 2024 by Tero Jäntti and Sami Heikkinen, in the competition where the whole game has to fit in 13 KB. The runners, the track and the effects are drawn by code on a canvas, and the music and sound effects were made for the game.
Playing it here
Click Play, press any key on the title screen and then Enter to start the race. Hold the arrow keys or W A S D to run; you move in all eight directions, the track runs away from you up the screen, and steering left and right lets you slip through gaps. The sound is on, so check the volume. Nothing is saved between visits, and the game has no touch controls, so it is best on a computer with a keyboard.

A few things worth knowing
You only have to beat 13. To go through, you do not need to win a round, just not be in the last 13. Do not take risks in the first race.
Stay out of the crowd's centre. Runners block and shove each other, so running along the edges or behind a gap is often faster than pushing straight through.
Know the rounds. Each round is a new track, and the runners who are left get the same rule again, so keep an eye on the counters at the top.
