About the game

8 Bit Panda is a side-scrolling platformer in the classic mould. A small panda sets off across six islands, each with its own look and its own enemies: bats, slimes, fish in the water, snow demons that throw snowballs, icicles that drop from the ceiling and plasma-spitting demons further on. You walk from level to level on a world map, and every island has three stages before the bridge to the next one opens.

Along the way you pick up leaves and food for points, and every 10,000 points earns an extra life. Bamboo is the panda's best friend: green bamboo turns it into a super panda that can take one hit without losing a life, and yellow bamboo lets it throw bamboo shoots for a while. Later on there are crumbling blocks, timed platforms, lifts, water sections and even a little plane that flies as long as it has fuel.

Playing it here

8 Bit Panda was made for TIC-80, a fantasy console: an imaginary 1980s-style computer with a 240 by 136 screen and 16 colours, for which independent developers write new games. It runs here in the official TIC-80 web player. Click Play and press Z on the title screen; a short screen shows the controls before the first level.

The game remembers how far you got. After the last stage of each island it saves your progress in this browser, and the next time you press Z on the title screen you can choose between continuing from there or starting a new game. Esc opens the TIC-80 menu. A gamepad works directly, and on touch screens an on-screen D-pad and buttons appear.

A few things worth knowing

Read the signs. Wooden signs in the early levels explain what each kind of bamboo does and how points turn into lives; walk past them to see the message.

Keep the green bamboo. As a super panda you survive one enemy touch, which makes the trickier jumps much less stressful. Losing it costs nothing more than the protection itself.

Watch the fuel on the plane. The plane only flies while the fuel gauge at the top of the screen lasts. Grab the fuel cans on the way and land on the runway before it runs dry.
