About the game

Aces Up is one of the quickest solitaires in the deck and one of the hardest to win. The cards are dealt four at a time, one on each of four piles, and only the top card of each pile is in play. If two of the visible cards share a suit, the lower one can be discarded, with Aces counting high. A card you cannot discard sits where it is and holds up the pile, and when a pile is empty you may move any top card into the space.

The aim is to finish with nothing left but the four Aces, one on each pile, once the whole stock has been dealt. It needs good timing: every discard opens the pile below, and the card underneath may either free up the next discard or trap you. Most games are lost, which is part of the charm, and a game takes only a couple of minutes.

This HTML5 version by milsaware needs no images. The cards are drawn with CSS, and the game shows the time, the moves and the number of hands you played and won in this session.

Playing it here

Click Play. The first four cards are already on the table, and the stock (the pile of backs at the left) holds the rest. When a higher card of the same suit is showing on another pile, click the top card of a pile and the game discards it for you to the empty slot at the right; dragging it there works too. Moving a card onto an empty pile needs drag and drop, which works with a mouse and on most laptops with a touchpad, but may not on a phone or tablet. Click the stock to deal four more cards, and press D at any time to start a new game.

Controls

Input Action
click the stock deal one card on each of the four piles
click the top card of a pile discard it, if a higher card of its suit is showing
drag a card to the discard slot the same, by hand
drag a card onto an empty pile move it there
D deal a new game

A few things worth knowing

Think before you deal. Discard everything you can first: dealing four new cards covers four piles at once and can bury a card you needed.

Empty piles are gold. A free pile lets you park a card and reach what is below it, so try to empty a pile early.

Keep a high card of each suit. A King on show makes every lower card of its suit discardable. Kings are good to keep, while Aces must stay.
