About the game

Alex vs Bus: The Race is a platform runner with a very ordinary goal: catch the bus. Alex is a man who depends on public transportation in a developing country, and when the bus pulls away from the stop, the only way to get on is to run after it and get there first. Missing it means waiting a very long time for the next one.

Each level is a race along the street. Holes, crates, springs and parked cars get in the way, and there are coins to pick up for the score along the route. The game has three difficulty settings: Normal and Hard with five levels each, and Super with three.

This is the Mega Drive version of the free game of the same name, by the same author. This release (pre3) can be played from start to finish.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Mega Drive: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in ClownMDEmu, a Mega Drive emulator compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now, choose Play on the title menu and pick a difficulty.

The game saves your progress on the cartridge's battery memory, which this site keeps in your browser automatically. F2 also saves the full state of the emulator and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too. The game is in English.

Controls

Key Mega Drive button Action
Left / Right arrows D-pad run
Z / X / C A / B / C jump; confirm in the menus
Up / Down arrows D-pad choose in the menus
Enter Start pause menu (Resume, Restart, Settings, Quit)
F2 / F4 — save / load the emulator state

A few things worth knowing

The bus does not stop for you. Losing time on an obstacle is often worse than taking a small risk to keep running.

Restart is quick. The pause menu restarts the level straight away, so a bad start costs only a few seconds.

Settings can be changed mid-race. Music and sound effect options are in the pause menu as well as on the title screen.

The Jukebox on the title menu plays the game's music.
