About the game

Alien Egg Farm drops you on a small planet seen from above, with a single alien and three minutes on the clock. The aliens hatch from eggs, wander in straight lines and lay new eggs every few seconds. You score by walking over the eggs to pick them up, so the more aliens you let live, the more eggs there will be.

The catch is in the ending. When the clock reaches zero, any alien still alive means you lose, and the round ends early if there are no aliens left. So the plan is to let the colony grow for a while, harvest as much as you can, and leave enough time to hunt every last alien down, which you do by simply walking into them. With hundreds of them running around the screen, that last stretch gets tense.

The game was made in 48 hours for the Reddit Game Jam 06 (theme: energy) by Andras Nemeth, and it has the look and the pace of a jam game: one screen, one idea, a round of three minutes.

Tips

Wait before you hunt. In the first minute there are few aliens and few eggs, and every alien you squash early is a source of eggs you will not get. Collect the eggs that are on the ground and let the rest multiply.

Leave time for the cleanup. The aliens never speed up, but they spread over the whole screen and the planet wraps around at the edges, so the last ones can be a long walk away. Start hunting well before the final ten seconds.

Eggs are safe to touch. You only squash an alien once it has hatched, so you can walk through a field of eggs without losing anything.

Frequently asked questions

Is it Flash? Yes, the original game file, played with Ruffle, an open-source Flash player that runs in the browser without a plugin. We changed only one thing in the file: the font (see the credits).

Does it keep a high score? No. The original sends the score to an online leaderboard, which does not exist here, so you only see your number on the final screen.

Is it free? Yes. The game is free software under the MIT licence.

Credits and licence

Alien Egg Farm was made by Andras Nemeth (Zanda Games) and published with its source code under the MIT licence. The music, "Blip blop", is by Nevit Dilmen, who released it on Wikimedia Commons under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 licence, so that track stays under that licence. The game uses the Flixel library by Adam "Atomic" Saltsman (MIT). The font in the original file was replaced by Silkscreen, which has the SIL Open Font License 1.1, because the original one has no licence that lets us redistribute it. The full licence texts are in the licence file linked on this page. It runs on the Ruffle emulator, which is under the MIT or the Apache-2.0 licence.
