About the game

Ardentryst is a side-scrolling action RPG made by one person, Jordan Trudgett, between 2007 and 2009. You play Pyralis, a warrior, or Nyx, a mage, and travel across the lands of Ardentryst: forests with giant butterflies, snowy mountains and castles. You move from level to level on a map and every level you finish opens the next.

Each level is a platformer, with jumps, ledges, treasure chests, levers, signs and people to talk to. What makes it an RPG is everything around it. Your hero has health, mana, strength, endurance, magic and luck, gains levels and spends silver at the shops on better weapons and armour. Fights use combos, where a short sequence of buttons does a different attack, and the mage can focus and cast spells such as fire and ice. There are quests to accept and a story that is told in a few illustrated scenes.

Playing it here

The first time you click Play the page downloads the Python runtime and the pygame library (about 23 MB) and the game (about 25 MB), which takes a while; after that a "click to start" message appears, and one more click opens the game. The game then spends some time loading its pictures. Nothing is loaded from other sites. Your saved games and options stay in this browser only.

This version differs from the original in a few ways. The online score board, which no longer exists, is gone, and so are the Quit and fullscreen options. The sound effects of the original, which came from many different sources, are replaced by simple effects made for this site, while the music and the voices are the author's own.

A few things worth knowing

Hold the jump. The longer you hold Up, the higher the jump, which matters for the gaps and ledges.

Learn the combos. Pressing the attack button in a rhythm chains moves; the in-game menu lists the combos your hero knows.

Visit the shops. Silver buys better weapons and armour, and a few levels are much easier with them.

Equip what you buy. New gear does nothing until you equip it from the in-game menu.
