About the game

You are a lone gunslinger in a small town with a bonfire, a saloon and a notice board. The bounties on the board are the way to make money, and each one is worth more than the last. Accept a quest, head out and shoot your way to whoever is wanted, and come home to collect the reward. If you die, you lose everything you were carrying and start over from the first, smallest bounty, so the question is always how far your luck will go.

Everything is built from small coloured cubes: the buildings, the fences, the dust, even the blood. The camera looks down on the scene at an angle, the light is warm and low, and the town and the mine are generated from the date, so every day brings a slightly different layout.

Staś Małolepszy made Backcountry for js13kGames 2019, where the whole game, zipped, had to fit in 13 kilobytes. The voxel models are shrunk into a tiny custom format, and the sounds are synthesised by code.

Playing it here

Click Play and then Play Now on the title screen. You control the gunslinger with the mouse only: click where you want to go, click an enemy to shoot at him, or right-click to fire towards the pointer. Visit the notice board to accept a bounty, and walk into a campfire to heal. Nothing is saved: a new visit starts again with an empty purse.

Controls

Input Action
Left-click on the ground walk there
Left-click on an enemy shoot at him
Right-click fire towards the pointer
Click on a menu word accept, confirm, play again

A few things worth knowing

Fight from a distance. Move so that enemies have to come to you, and shoot as they arrive. Standing in the open lets several of them hit you at once.

Walk into a campfire to heal. It restores your health in full, but each campfire only works once, so save it for when you really need it.

The outfit shop is closed. The general store once changed your clothes for subscribers of a payment service that no longer exists; in this version that option is unavailable.

Credits and licence

Backcountry was created by Staś Małolepszy and released under the ISC licence. The licence text, including a notice for the vector and matrix maths it follows (gl-matrix, MIT), is linked from this page. The source code is on GitHub and in the js13kGames repository. The only changes in this version are the renamed model file and the shop message.
