About the game
You are the owner of a small bank in the middle of a yellow desert, and you have put all your capital into the best investment fund in the world. Every quarter it grows by 25 percent. Unfortunately, every bandit in the world has heard about it too, and they walk in from every side towards your house. Each one that reaches the door takes 100 away from your cash.
Bestfund inc. is a small tower-defence game dressed as a finance joke. You start with 300 in cash and no protection at all. Open the investors menu and buy a guard for 40, then click the roof of your building to put him there. Guards shoot at bandits that come within range. They also draw a salary every quarter, and that is the catch: the money that makes the fund grow is the money you spend on defending it. Towers (700) shoot from further away, and you can upgrade the range (100) and the fire rate (250) of everything you own. Each new quarter the waves get bigger, so the question is never whether you will be robbed, only how long your balance holds. The game ends when your cash drops below zero, and the final screen counts the quarters you survived, the thefts and the bandits stopped.
The "violence" is cartoon-sized: the bandits are a few dark pixels walking across the sand, the guards fire thin orange lines at them, and a bandit that is stopped simply disappears. There is no blood.
Playing it here
Bestfund inc. was made for TIC-80, a fantasy console: an imaginary 1980s-style computer with a 240 by 136 screen and 16 colours, for which independent developers write new games. Martin Sandgren made it for the Ludum Dare 40 jam in December 2017, whose theme was "more is worse", and it runs here in the official TIC-80 web player.
Click Play, wait for "Click to start" and click again, then click once more on the intro screen. The game is played entirely with the mouse and works best with a real one. Nothing is saved: each run starts over with 300 in cash. Esc opens the TIC-80 menu. The game has sound effects and music, and its text is in English.

A few things worth knowing
Buy a guard first. The game tells you so, and with no one on the roof the first bandits cost you 100 each.
Watch the salaries. Every guard costs 30 a quarter, so the sum you pay grows with every hire. Count the interest before you hire.
Spend on range early. A better range reaches the bandits sooner, before they are near the door, and it applies to all your guards at once.
