About the game
Blob Attack is a falling-blocks puzzle in the tradition of the colour-matching games. Pairs of blobs, each with its own face, drop into a pit eight blobs wide and ten tall. You slide and turn each pair on the way down, and when four blobs of the same kind end up together, in a horizontal line, a vertical line or a two-by-two square, they pop and everything above them falls.
That fall is where the points are. If the blobs that drop form a new group of four, it pops too, and each extra link in the chain is worth more than the last. The panel on the right shows the next pair and the one after it, so you can plan ahead.
Beside the pit sits an elf drawn by castpixel, who reacts to how you play: a nod for a good pop, a thumbs-up for a chain, and plain panic when the pile gets close to the top. The score speeds the game up in steps, and when the blobs reach the top, it is over.
Playing it here
This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by independent developers, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now and choose PLAY on the title menu.
The game does not keep scores between sessions; only the sound setting is stored, in the emulated memory of the Arduboy that this browser keeps automatically. F2 saves the complete state of the game at any moment, and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.
This build comes from the Team-ARG-Museum archive, which removed a QR code that pointed to the team's old website, now gone. That code was all the HELP screen showed, so HELP is now empty: the controls are below.
Controls
| Key | Arduboy button | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Left / right | D-pad | move the pair |
| Down | D-pad | drop faster |
| X | B | rotate clockwise |
| Z | A | rotate anticlockwise |
| Up | D-pad | pause and resume |
| F2 / F4 | — | save / load the state |
A few things worth knowing
Squares count. Four alike in a two-by-two block pop just like four in a line, which is often the easiest group to build.
Stack for chains. Leave a group of three waiting under blobs of another kind. When you clear those, the three meet their fourth on the way down and the chain begins.
Keep the middle low. New pairs enter near the top centre of the pit. A tall pile there ends the game sooner than one at the sides.
Credits and licence
Blob Attack was made in 2015 by TEAM a.r.g.: the game is by JO3RI and all the art is by castpixel. The credits screen also thanks Lexaloffle, and the readme thanks MLXXXp for moving it to the Arduboy2 library. It is free software under the MIT licence. It uses the Arduboy2 (BSD) and ArduboyTones (MIT) libraries by Scott Allen. The licence texts are linked from this page. The team has since disbanded, and its games and source code are kept by the Team-ARG-Museum archive on GitHub.
