About the game

Two blobs, one net and a ball. That is all Blobby Volley 2 needs. Each blob can only walk left and right and jump, and the ball bounces off blobs, walls and the net with a floaty, easy-to-read physics that is the whole game. Where the ball meets the blob decides where it goes, and a jump into the ball hits it harder than a touch from the ground.

The rules are plain. A team can touch the ball three times before it has to cross the net. If the ball lands on your side of the sand, or you touch it a fourth time, the other blob scores. The first blob to 15 points, with at least a two-point lead, wins the match. Rallies start from a serve, and getting the first hit right matters as much as the last.

Blobby Volley 2 is a free-software successor to the older Blobby Volley; the credits thank Daniel Skoraszewsky, who made that one. This version comes from the project's current repository (version 1.1.1) and keeps its menus, its bot scripts and its rules.

Playing it here

The download is about 5 MB, and the game starts from a menu in the middle of the beach. Choose Start to begin a match. At first the left blob is a bot and you control the right one with the arrow keys. In Options you can choose who plays each side (a human or one of several bots), change the colours of the blobs, the bot's skill, the rules and the points needed to win. For two players on one keyboard, set both sides to human: the left blob then uses A, D and W.

This build leaves out the online and LAN modes of the original, since the site does not host game servers. Your options and saved replays stay in this browser, and Watch replay plays the matches you saved.

The three sound effects (the ball hit, the referee whistle and a chat beep) are original to this site: the ones in the repository do not say who made them, so we replaced them with our own, released into the public domain.

Controls

Input Action
Left and right arrows move the right blob
Up arrow jump
A, D and W move and jump the left blob (when set to human)
Mouse choose in the menus
Esc pause and ask whether to quit the match (you can also save its replay)

Tips

Jump into the ball. A blob that touches the ball while going up hits it harder; a blob that waits on the ground can only bump it.

Use the three touches. A soft first touch to your own side, then a jump for a hard second one, makes the ball harder for the other side to reach.

Watch the net. Balls that clip the top of the net can drop on either side. Stay in the middle until you see which way it falls.

Change the bot. In the options you can pick a different bot and set its strength, so the match can be as easy or as hard as you like.

FAQ

Can I play online? Not in this version: the multiplayer modes need game servers, which the site does not run. Two players can share one keyboard.

Are my replays saved? Yes, in this browser. Clearing the site data deletes them.

Credits

Blobby Volley 2 is programmed by Jonathan Sieber, Daniel Knobe, Sven Rech and Erik Schultheis, with graphics by Silvio Mummert and a new beach image by Richard Bertrand; the game's credits also thank Daniel Skoraszewsky. The bot scripts that come with the game were written by members of its community. The three sound effects in this version were made for this site.
