About the game

Candy Wrapper is a one-screen arcade platformer with an old idea at its heart: you and a handful of small creatures share a few floating ledges, and the only way to clear the room is to land on all of them. The creatures, called goobers, patrol back and forth along the platforms. Jump on one from above and it pops in a little burst; walk into one from the side, or while you stand on the floor, and you are the one who pops.

The screen is a wrap-around world. Leave through the right edge and you come back in at the left; fall through the bottom and you land at the top. That turns every room into a loop, and a lot of the fun is in using the loop: dropping off one side to arrive above a goober on the other, or running past a patrol so that the wrap puts you behind it.

There are 20 rooms, from a quiet first lesson to crowded ones where the platforms are narrow and the goobers are many. Clear a room and you move on to the next; lose and the game sends you back one room as a penalty, so a mistake late in the game costs real progress. A final screen waits at the end. The art is a small palette of oranges and browns on cream, in a style close to the old handheld games, with chunky pixel type and a bouncy, electronic soundtrack.

It started as a 24-hour entry for a small jam, was rebuilt in Godot, and is open source.

Playing it here

Click Play, wait for the page to load (about 14 MB, downloaded only when you press the button) and press Space on the title screen. The game needs a keyboard; a gamepad also works if your browser sees it. The soundtrack loops while you play. Nothing is saved: each visit starts at the first room.

Controls

Input Action
Left / Right arrows, A / D or J / L run
Space, Up arrow, W, I, Z or X jump; hold it for a higher jump, release early for a short hop
Gamepad d-pad or stick, and a face button run and jump

Tips

Land from above. A stomp only counts when you are falling or at the top of a jump and the goober is below you. If you are standing on the same ledge, you cannot touch it.

Use the wrap. The edges are doors. Many rooms are meant to be solved by leaving the screen and coming back in over the head of a patrol.

Short hops beat big jumps. Release the jump button early to stay low and keep control of where you come down; save the full jump for the gaps.

Watch the turn-around. Goobers walk to the end of a ledge and turn. Wait for their back to face you, then drop in.
