About the game
CannonSmash Web is a 3D table tennis game that runs in the browser. You play against the computer on a regulation-style table, with a net, a ball that spins and bounces, and rules that follow the real sport: games to 11 points, deuce at 10-10 (win by two), the serve changing every two points and a match of the best of three games. There are three difficulty levels, Easy, Normal and Hard, and the harder the opponent, the less the game helps you to get into position.
It is a remake of Cannon Smash, a free 3D table tennis game written by Kanna Yoshihiro in the 2000s under the same open-source licence. This version is a new program, but the heart of it, the physics of the ball in flight, the bounce, the way a shot is aimed and the state of each rally, is a direct port of the original code, so the ball behaves the way fans of the old game remember. The project was rewritten from scratch in July 2026 by an AI (Claude, from Anthropic) following the design and the notes of its author, and the authors say so in the notice that comes with the code. It is built around touch screens, which is why the controls look the way they do.
Playing it here
Click Play and wait for the page to load, choose a difficulty and press PLAY. At the start of each point the message tells you who serves. The game is meant for a touch screen, and with a mouse it works but asks for some practice: the flicks have to be fast. Drag slowly to move, and when you want to hit the ball, move the mouse quickly upward and let go. On a phone or tablet, use your finger the same way.
Controls
| Gesture | Action |
|---|---|
| Drag left or right | move your paddle sideways |
| Quick flick up | hit the ball: the angle aims, the speed gives power, and an upward flick adds topspin |
| Quick flick down | a backspin push, slower and safer |
| Quick flick up (on your serve) | toss the ball and serve |
| X (top, center) | quit the match and go back to the menu |
| Tap (after the match) | return to the menu |
Tips
Get under the ball. You can only hit it when it arrives within reach of the paddle, so move first and flick at the last moment. When you are not dragging, the game drifts you toward where the ball is going to be, but on the higher levels that help is slower.
Use the push to reset. A backspin push keeps the ball low and slow, and gives you time to get back in position after a hard shot.
Aim with the angle of the flick. Flicking up and to one side sends the ball to that side of the table; a long, fast flick hits harder but is easier to get wrong.
FAQ
Is it the original Cannon Smash? No. It is a new browser version of it, written with the original's physics code as a base. The original, for computers, is a different program that you can find on SourceForge.
Can I play with a keyboard? No, the game is controlled by dragging and flicking, with a finger or a mouse.
Is there sound? Yes, the sounds are generated by the browser, and the menu has a button to turn them off.
Can two people play? No, you always play against the computer.
Credits and licence
CannonSmash Web was made by jgbrwn and is free software under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later. It is a derivative work of Cannon Smash by Kanna Yoshihiro, also under the GPL, and the rewrite was done with the AI Claude, as the notice of the project explains. The 3D scene is drawn by three.js, under the MIT licence, and the project has no image or audio files. Because it is under the GPL, the complete source of the version played here, including the file that fixes the exact libraries and the build script, is linked from this page, together with the licence texts.
