About the game

Casual Crusade is a small tile game with a deck of cards behind it. Your piece stands on a patch of green land, and each level is a map of connected lands that you have to cross. You cross them by laying down path tiles from your hand: straight pieces, corners, junctions, each with its own openings. The path has to line up with itself, so every placement is a little puzzle about which tile goes where and which ones to save for later.

When you open a chest on the map you get a reward. You pick one of a few new tiles to add to your deck, or sometimes a special ability, called a relic, that changes how scoring or movement works. A relic can do something as odd as multiplying the score for stepping on a certain tile, so which ones you collect shapes the whole run. The deck and the relics carry over from level to level, which gives the game a strategy-and-roguelike feel, even though a session is short.

There is a life counter in the corner. Mistakes and hazards on the map cost you lives, and a run ends when they run out, so the goal is to go as far as you can and finish with the highest score.

Antti Haavikko made Casual Crusade for js13kGames 2023, where the whole game, zipped, had to fit in 13 kilobytes. The theme that year was Old Technology.

Playing it here

Click Play, then click the title screen to start. Your hand of tiles appears at the bottom of the screen and the map in the middle. Drag a tile onto an open square next to your piece to extend the path, and keep going to cover the lands and reach the chests. When the reward screen appears, click the tile or relic you want. The game is made for a 4:3 window. Press F for full screen. Nothing is saved: a new visit starts a new run.

A few things worth knowing

Plan the opening of each tile. A tile is only useful if its openings meet the next one. Look at what you hold before you commit to a direction.

Rewards compound. A tile you add now will come back many times in later levels, so pick the ones that fit the way you are already playing.

Read the relic text. The description tells exactly when it triggers, and a good combination can multiply your score.
