About the game

The white king has won. Your army is gone, your queen has been taken prisoner, and the knights have orders to bring you in alive. Chess Pursuit flips the usual game around: instead of planning a slow attack, you play a lone black king running for his life across a board that never ends, rolling towards you like a road seen from the driver's seat.

The rules of movement are the real ones. You step one square at a time in any direction, and the white pawns, knights, bishops, rooks and queens that appear ahead threaten exactly the squares they would threaten in a normal game. Those squares light up in red. Step onto one, or let a piece reach you, and it is checkmate. The board keeps moving forward on its own, so standing still is not an option either: you have to read the position quickly and find a safe path through it.

Saturnyn made Chess Pursuit for js13kGames 2015, whose theme was "Reversed". The pieces are drawn in SVG, the curved board is computed by the code, and the whole thing fits in 13 KB.

Playing it here

Click Play and then click the board, or press Space, to go through the short introduction between the two kings. When the chase begins, move with the arrow keys or click in the direction you want to step. The run is split by checkpoints: after a checkmate, Space or a click restarts from the last one you passed. Nothing is saved between visits.

Controls

Key Action
← → ↑ ↓ or W A S D move the king one square (press two together for a diagonal)

A few things worth knowing

You do not need to know chess. The red squares show every threat, so the game can be played by sight alone. Knowing how the pieces move still helps you plan a few rows ahead.

Knights are the sneakiest. Their jump goes over other pieces, so a gap that looks open can be covered by a knight two columns away.

Keep some room. Hugging the edge of the board leaves you with fewer escape squares when a rook or a queen slides into your row.
