Chri-Bocchi Cat

About the game

It is Christmas Eve, snow is falling, and a cat is spending it alone. Then Santa flies past and drops a single gift box. Chri-Bocchi Cat is a two-minute juggling act: walk the cat under the falling box and it bounces off the cat's head, splitting into two boxes as it goes.

Every bounce scores a point and adds a box, so the screen fills up fast, and the further from the centre of the cat a box lands, the wider it flies. In the last thirty seconds the word "Fever!!" flashes and every bounce turns one box into three. When the clock runs out the cat stops catching, the remaining boxes fall to the ground and your score is the number of bounces.

The name plays on a Japanese slang word for spending Christmas on your own. OBONO made the game in December 2017 for the Arduboy community's Game Jam 2.0.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now and choose Start Game on the title screen.

The game remembers its ten best scores in the emulated memory of the Arduboy, and that is kept in this browser automatically. F2 also saves the complete state of the game at any moment, and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Arduboy button Action
Left / right D-pad move the cat
Down D-pad meow
Z or X A or B pause and resume; start again after a game; choose in menus
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

The first boxes matter most. Every box you lose early is a whole family of boxes you will never get to bounce. Play the opening carefully.

Catch them in the middle. A box that lands near the centre of the cat bounces high and its copies stay close together; one caught on the edge flies off sideways, low and fast.

Save something for the fever. The final thirty seconds triple every bounce, so the more boxes are still in the air when it starts, the bigger the score.
