About the game

Clean Line is a small puzzle about tidying up a landscape by train. Each level is a tile map with houses, rocks and mountains, a few spots where garbage is piled up, and one or more recycling centres. Between them there are no rails at all: you lay them yourself, one piece at a time, from the palette of straight pieces and corners at the left of the screen. A train waits at the edge of the map. When the rails are ready you press Space, the train drives along them, picks the garbage up and delivers it to a recycling centre. Fill all the centres to complete the level.

The challenge is in the budget. The palette shows how many pieces of each shape you have, so the route has to be planned: a rock in the way, a house to go around, a train that can only carry so much garbage, and a limited number of curves. The panel on the right shows the three steps of a run, build, collect and dispose, how many centres you have filled, and what the train is holding.

The game was made in 48 hours for Ludum Dare 58, whose theme was "Collector", and the pixel art, sound effects and music are the author's own. The author lists Claude Code among the tools he used to write the code, along with Bitwig, Audacity, LibreSprite and GIMP for the sound and pictures.

Playing it here

The game runs in the page and needs a mouse and a keyboard. It does not save: a level is a few minutes' work. The download is about 2 MB, mostly the two music loops. Sound starts after your first click.

Press H at any time for the in-game help.

Tips

Plan the route before you press Space. Start from the train and work towards the garbage, and keep an eye on the numbers on the palette.

Right click is free. Taking a piece back to try another path costs nothing, so experiment.

Reset when you are stuck. R puts the level back as it was and gives you all the pieces again.
