About the game

The theme of Ludum Dare 33 was "You are the monster", and in Coconuts the monster is a palm tree. It stands in the middle of a bright beach with a mountain behind it, a calm sea at the bottom and a row of tourists walking along the sand in both directions, each of a different kind, as if nothing could go wrong. Overhead hangs a bunch of coconuts, and the tree knows what to do with them.

The game plays to a bouncy chiptune, and everything moves on its beat. A click, a tap or the space bar makes the tree let a coconut fall. When it lands on a tourist it bounces back up, and if it lands on another, it bounces again. Each hit scores 100 times the number of hits that coconut has made in a row, multiplied by how much that kind of tourist is worth, so one coconut that skips along a whole line of people is worth far more than a handful that each hit once.

At the top you can see the score, a counter of bars left, which starts at 100 and goes down with the music, and the high score, which turns red when you beat it. When the bars run out the title comes back and you can play again.

Coconuts was made by Cong (cxong) as an open-source entry. The graphics and the sounds were made for it, and the tune was written in a chiptune tracker.

A few things worth knowing

Listen for the beat. The tree and the tourists move in time with the music, and the coconuts fall best when you press with it.

Aim for lines of tourists. A coconut that keeps bouncing gets a bigger bonus on each hit, so wait for the walkers to bunch up under the tree.

There is no way to lose lives. The only limit is the 100 bars, so there is no reason to hurry the first coconut.
