About the game

Coric's Quest is a small fantasy role-playing game in the style of the console RPGs of the 1980s and 1990s. You guide Coric, a young hero, through a land thrown into chaos. It was once watched over by the Elemental Spirits and is now possessed by a mysterious darkness, and the spirits are losing their power. The way to set things right leads through three realms, each with its own dungeon and a boss at the end of it.

The game is about the simple joys of the genre: walking around towns and fields, talking to people, opening chests, solving a few small puzzles with levers and blocks, and fighting monsters while the numbers go up. Battles are turn-based and one-on-one: you choose to attack, cast one of four spells or use one of four kinds of items, and the enemy answers. There are twenty-four kinds of enemies, and you can find four weapons and four armours, so exploring pays off. Winning battles raises your level.

The author says it holds about two hours of play, with music for the towns, fields, dungeons, battles and bosses. The whole game, with its pictures, music and levels, is one program made in Rust.

Playing it here

Click Play, then click inside the game once so that it receives the keyboard, and press Space on the title screen. Your progress is saved in this browser when you save the game, and the volume settings are saved too. The Options entry of the main menu (Left Ctrl) has the volumes and the credits. The on-screen text uses a different font from the original game, because the original font had no author or licence given.

Tips

Talk to everyone. People in the towns give hints about where to go and about the puzzles.

Open every chest. Weapons, armour and potions make the fights in the dungeons much easier.

Heal before a boss. The boss of each realm is much stronger than the monsters on the way; arrive with your health and magic full, and with potions in the bag.
