About the game

Doppelkopf is the card game that German players take to the pub. Four people play with two decks of 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace, which makes 40 cards (the variant without the nines), ten for each player. It is a trick-taking game: you play a card in turn, follow the suit if you can, and whoever plays the highest card wins the trick and its points. What sets it apart is that the teams are secret. Whoever holds the Queen of clubs plays for the Re side, the others play for Kontra, and nobody says which they are. You find out from the cards that appear on the table, and from the announcements that people dare to make.

Trumps do most of the work. The Jacks and Queens, all the diamonds and the Ten of hearts (the Dulle) outrank everything else, so a hand is built around how many of them you were dealt. A good deal can be won on the strength of a few high cards, and a bad one needs the cunning of a good partner you have not met yet.

This version by Hermann Vocke runs entirely in the browser, with Vue and TypeScript. You sit at the bottom of the table and the three computer players, with their German-sounding names, fill the other seats. It plays the normal game, without the solos, weddings and other special contracts, which the author leaves for a later version. The interface follows your browser language and is available in English and German.

Playing it here

Click Play, type your name if you want to and press the start button. Your ten cards are at the bottom of the screen and the other players' hands are the red backs on the other three sides. When it is your turn, click a card once to select it and click it again to play it; the game does not let you break the rules, so a card that does not follow suit is not accepted. After the four cards of a trick are on the table, press Next trick. The small label under your name says whether you are on Re or on Kontra. The Announce button opens a menu of announcements you can make, such as Re, No 90, No 60, No 30 and No points. The gear at the top right of the screen opens the options. Nothing is saved between visits except your name.

A few things worth knowing

Count the trumps. There are 24 of them in the deck, and the Queen of clubs and the Ten of hearts are the strongest. If you hold several, the game will come to you.

Work out the partners. The player who plays the Queen of clubs shows their side. Until then, watch who wins tricks that you thought you were losing.

Do not waste your Aces. A fat trick, with Tens and Aces, is worth fighting for, because the team that scores 121 of the 240 points wins the hand.
