About the game

Double Action Blaster Guys is an arcade platformer in the single-screen style: each level fits on one screen, full of platforms, hazards and enemies that walk, hop, fly, drop bombs or shoot back. You run, jump and fire until the level's goal is met, and then it is on to the next one.

The goal changes from level to level. Sometimes you have to defeat a number of enemies, sometimes collect a certain amount of money, sometimes just stay alive for a set time, and some levels ask you to turn green blocks red. With 52 levels, power-ups and more than twenty kinds of enemy, there is plenty to get through, and a second player can drop in at any time.

The menu also has a level editor, so you can build your own rooms and play them right away.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the NES: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in jsnes, an NES emulator written in JavaScript. Click Play now, choose Play Game in the menu and pick who is playing, the mode and where to start.

F2 saves the current state of the game in this browser and F4 brings it back. A gamepad also works. For two players, the second player can use the numeric keypad or a second gamepad, and joins in by pressing A and B together.

Controls

Key NES button Action
Arrow keys Control Pad move, choose in menus
X A jump
Z B shoot (hold to run faster)
Down + X Down + A drop through a platform
X + Z A + B join the game
Enter Start pause and resume
Shift or Ctrl Select skip the level
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

While paused, Start and Select together go back to the main menu. Player 2 uses the numeric keypad: 8, 2, 4 and 6 to move, 7 for A, 9 for B, 1 for Start and 3 for Select.

A few things worth knowing

Read the goal. The screen before each level says what it takes to finish it: defeat enemies, collect money, survive, or turn the green blocks red.

Three ways to play with a friend. With two players you can work together, compete for points or fight each other.

Start further in. The level menu lets you begin at later levels or go straight to the bonus levels, and you can turn power-ups off for a harder run.

Make your own. Level Edit in the main menu opens the editor; when you test a level, Select takes you back to editing.
