About the game
down8 drops you into a shaft that never ends. Each screen holds three small platforms at different heights, placed at random, and you fall past them while steering left and right. Land on a platform and you bounce off it, breaking it and adding one to your combo. Fall past one without touching it and you lose a point of health and the combo starts again.
When you reach the bottom of a screen the next one begins, and the level counter goes up. After ten levels the platforms get narrower, and after twenty they are only a pixel wide. When your health runs out, the game shows the level you reached and your best combo. As its author says, you fall down a hole and then you die; the question is how far you get.
Playing it here
This is a CHIP-8 program. CHIP-8 is a small virtual machine from 1977, created for hobby computers such as the COSMAC VIP, and people still write new games for it today. down8 targets the original CHIP-8 and was made for Octojam 2, a CHIP-8 game jam held in October 2015. It runs here in the Octo emulator. Click Play, then press W on the title screen and again on the help screen.
F2 saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too: the D-pad steers and Up starts.
Controls
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| A / D or Left / Right arrows | move left or right |
| W or Up arrow | start; continue from the help and game over screens |
| V on the title screen | switch to the hardest stage (shows BOSS) |
| F2 / F4 | save / load the state |
A few things worth knowing
Every platform matters. Health only drops when you miss a platform, so it pays to line up under the next one early rather than chase a far one at the last moment.
Let go of W. Holding W during the fall stops you from bouncing, so you sink through platforms and lose health. Press it only on the menus.
Want a challenge right away? Press V on the title screen to start on the one-pixel platforms of the last stage. The word BOSS shows while it is on; V toggles it, so a long press can switch it straight back off.
