About the game

Aliens have invaded the colony and killed everyone. Your new mission: escape. Evade tells that in a few lines of text at the start and then drops you into the cockpit of a small ship, flying from left to right through a field of stars while enemy ships come at you from the other side of the screen.

The game is a classic side-scrolling shooter with a smooth, shaded look that goes well beyond black and white. A counter keeps your score and a bar shows the state of your ship, and the screen warns you that enemies are approaching as you start. You have two weapons. The first is a fireball, the harder hitter, which spends charge from the gun, and the charge refills over time, so you cannot hold the button down forever; the second is a small laser, weaker but quicker to fire. Learning to alternate between them, and to leave room to dodge, is the game.

Modus Create, a software company, made Evade as a gift for its clients for the 2016 holidays. Its sequel, Evade 2, is also on this site.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by an independent team, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now and wait for the story and the credits to run (a button press skips ahead), then pick PLAY on the menu. The same menu has CREDITS and SETTINGS.

The game keeps no records, but F2 saves the complete state of the emulated console at any moment and F4 brings it back, handy before a hard wave. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Arduboy button Action
Arrow keys D-pad fly the ship; choose in menus
Z A fireball (uses gun charge)
X B small laser
Z or X A or B confirm in menus
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Watch the charge. The fireball only fires when the gun has enough charge, and it takes a moment to build up again, so pick your targets.

Mix both weapons. The laser keeps working while the charge refills, and the fireball is for the tougher ships.

Leave room. Staying in the middle of the screen gives you the most space to dodge in both directions.
