Fagos Across Your System

About the game

You are a Fago, a bacteriophage, in a microscopic world, and the system you live in has been invaded by bacteria and other strange things. Your weapon is your own DNA, which you shoot across the screen at whatever comes at you, and the invaders are going to defend themselves.

It is a side-scrolling shoot'em up in three levels, each with its own look and its own boss. You start with ten lives, every enemy you destroy is worth points, and when your score reaches a threshold the level changes into a boss fight: the bosses shoot back, and the last one has bacteria to help it. Beating a boss opens the next level, and finishing the third level ends the game with a congratulations screen.

The game was made for the 2021 edition of Game Off, GitHub's yearly game jam, by Juan Carlos Cardona Silveyra and Renata Ochoa Morales, using the Pyxel engine. It has pixel art in a soft pink and blue palette, a chiptune soundtrack and dripping lettering for the titles.

Playing it here

The first time you click Play the page downloads Pyxel and the Python runtime (about 15 MB), which takes a few seconds; after that the game shows a "click to start" prompt, and one more click starts it with sound. Nothing is loaded from other sites, and nothing is saved: every game starts from the first level.

On the web we turned off the Q key and the Esc key that closed the game on the desktop (and the "press Q to quit" lines of the screens), because on a web page they would only freeze the screen. After a game over, Enter tries again.

Controls

Input Action
Arrow keys move the Fago
Space (hold) shoot, repeating
Tab pause
Enter start, resume, go to the next level and try again

A few things worth knowing

Hold the fire key. Space repeats by itself, so you can keep it pressed and spend your attention on moving.

Stay out of the crowd. Enemies come in groups; shoot from the edge of the screen where you have room to back away.

Use the pause. Tab freezes the game, which is useful to catch your breath before a boss.

Frequently asked questions

How many levels are there? Three, each ending in a boss fight; after the third you see the game complete screen.

What happens when I lose all lives? A game over screen appears; press Enter to try again. A game over in the first two levels sends you back to the first level; in the last one you restart that last level.

Does it work on a phone? The game was made for a keyboard or a game pad. The page offers an on-screen pad on touch devices, but we have not tested the game with it.

Why does it say "click to start"? Browsers only allow sound after you interact with the page, so the Pyxel launcher asks for one click before it starts the game.

Is it free? Yes: the game is open source under the MIT licence, and the source of this build is available from this page.

Credits and licence

Fagos Across Your System was made by Juan Carlos Cardona Silveyra and Renata Ochoa Morales for Game Off 2021, with the code, the pixel art and the sounds in the repository (the images and sounds in a Pyxel resource file) under the MIT licence. The build served here changes a few things, all published as a patch with the source: the Q key and the "press Q to quit" lines are gone, the Pyxel quit key is off, and a bug that crashed the game when you tried again after a game over is fixed. It runs on the Pyxel engine (MIT) and the Pyodide runtime (MPL-2.0), whose licences and source are linked from the Licenses page.
