About the game

Falling is an endless dodging game. Your character is in free fall, and the sky keeps scrolling past with floating obstacles drifting through it. You can only move left and right, and every hit costs a life. Coins add to your score, extra lives are worth chasing, and the game ends when the lives run out.

It starts slow and gets faster. The game ramps up in small steps, and after about four minutes everything is moving at full speed, with pickups showing up more often as well. The best score of the session is kept at the top of the screen.

Jesse Williams wrote Falling in 6502 assembly as his first NES game, from scratch, in about eleven days; version 1.1 smoothed out the difficulty curve and added new music for the Day mode.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the NES: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in jsnes, an NES emulator written in JavaScript. Click Play now, choose a mode with the up and down arrows and press Enter.

F2 saves the current state of the game in this browser and F4 brings it back. A gamepad also works.

Controls

Key NES button Action
Left / right arrows Control Pad move
Up / down arrows Control Pad choose the mode on the title screen
Enter Start start, pause and resume
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Three modes, three moods. Day, Sunset and Night each have their own look and their own music.

You start with three lives. Extra lives can take you up to nine. After a hit you are briefly invulnerable, so use that moment to get clear.

Stay near the middle. From the centre you can reach either side quickly when an obstacle drifts toward you.
