Faraday cage Rampage

About the game

A hermit lives among the antennas that carry every phone call and video in the region, and he wants them silent. His weapon is a tin foil hat that soaks up energy; his plan is to wall each antenna inside a Faraday cage so that nothing gets in or out. The antennas, naturally, are guarded by drones.

The game plays as a top-down arena shooter. You walk around a small map of purple walls and cyan floors, collect the scraps that lie around, and shoot the floating drones that chase you, and every hit costs you life. Stand next to an antenna with ten scraps in your pocket and a cage rises around it, and the job is done when every antenna is offline. The top of the screen keeps count of your scraps, your life and the energy stored in the hat. Standing near an antenna charges the hat, and shooting spends that energy, so the shots you take matter.

Everything was drawn by the author pixel by pixel, in a text editor, with a letter standing in for each colour, and some tile details and animations are generated at random. The look is closer to a chunky 8-bit arcade game than to anything polished, and the mood is silly and a little paranoid. It is a short game and an early work: the author calls it the first full game he ever made.

Artur Augusto Martins made it for js13kGames 2018, a contest where the whole game has to fit in 13 kilobytes. That year's theme was "Offline", and it is hard to be more offline than a hermit with a tin foil hat.

Click Play, then press any key to start. The sound plays right away, so check your volume. The game area is fixed and fairly small, so it looks best in the full-screen button of the player. Click inside the game first if the keys do not respond.

A few things worth knowing

Collect scraps before you fight. You need ten scraps for a cage, so grab them while the drones are still far away.

Watch the energy. Every shot comes out of the hat's energy, and the hat recharges near the antennas, so lure the fight to them.

Keep moving. Your life only goes down, and standing still in a corridor makes you an easy target.
