About the game

Fifty Six LilyPads is a strategy game for two players, who can sit at the same screen or play one against a simple computer opponent. The board is a pond whose lilypads are linked by paths, drawn from a random Voronoi diagram, so every game has a different map. Some lilypads carry flies, from one to three, and some carry lotus flowers.

The game has two phases. First, each player in turn puts their three frogs, pink or blue, on lilypads that have a single fly. Then the frogs begin to hop. On your turn you pick one of your frogs, and the pads it can reach are highlighted: it can follow several connected pads in a straight line, but cannot jump over another frog. Every lilypad that a frog leaves behind sinks into the water, so the pond shrinks with every move. Each fly you eat is worth one point and each lotus five. The game ends when neither player can move, and the player with more points wins.

It is a game of planning: you want to get to the best pads before your opponent, but also to cut them off by sinking the paths they need. Dimitri Masson drew the frogs, flies and lilypads himself and wrote the music and the frog sounds, in 48 hours, for Ludum Dare 56, whose theme was "Tiny creatures".

Click on a frog, then on a highlighted lilypad hop to it

A few things worth knowing

Think about what you leave behind. The pad a frog leaves sinks, so your own path can cut you off from the lotus flowers.

Isolate your opponent. A frog with no pad to hop to cannot move, so sinking the connections around it costs your opponent points.

Lotus flowers are worth five flies. It is usually worth a longer trip to reach one.
