About the game

Find the Dogchicken is a crafting puzzle. You start with twelve simple things (water, a tree, iron ore, a ball, fire, a cloth, a cow, a bottle, a comb, a plate, a spring and a bush), shown as a grid of small icons. Pick two of them and the game tries to combine them. A good combination gives you a new item, which joins the grid and can be combined again. A bad one tells you "Invalid combo" and lets you try something else. Iron ore and fire, for instance, make steel, and steel opens the way to a lot of the rest.

The goal is in the title. The jam the game was made for gave the theme "a picture of a dog combined with a chicken", and the game turns that into a long chain of combinations. There are 28 of them to find in the end, from tools and food to a cat, a dog and a chicken and, finally, the dogchicken itself, with a few silly detours on the way, such as a pirate and a rust-coloured crab. The name of the item under the cursor shows at the bottom of the screen.

There is no timer, no score and no way to lose. The game is just you, a grid of icons, and the satisfaction of a combination that works.

Playing it here

Find the Dogchicken was made for Rusty Jam 2, a game jam for games written in Rust, and it runs on WASM-4, a fantasy console: an imaginary handheld with a 160 by 160 screen, four colours, a D-pad and two buttons, for which independent developers write new games. It runs here in the official WASM-4 web runtime and is about 29 KB. Nothing is saved between visits.

Controls

Input Action
Arrow keys move the cursor over the items
Z (button 2) select the first item to combine
X (button 1) select the second item to combine
Enter WASM-4 menu (pause, reset)

On a phone or tablet, the WASM-4 runtime shows touch buttons on the screen.

Tips

Try everything with everything. When you get stuck, a new item is usually one pair you have not tried yet.

Think about what goes together. Most combinations follow a plain idea, and a few are jokes, so trust both your logic and your sense of humour.

Take notes. There is no history, so write down what works.

FAQ

Is there a way to lose? No. You can try as many combinations as you like.

How many items are there? Twelve to start with, and about forty once you have found everything.
