About the game
Flight of the Amazon Queen is a comedy point-and-click adventure in the spirit of the old matinee serials. You play Joe King, a pilot for hire whose whole business is one battered seaplane, the Amazon Queen. When he lands the job of flying the movie star Faye Russell into the Amazon for a photo shoot, it looks like the break of a lifetime.
It does not start well. The game opens with Joe stuck in a cheap hotel in Rio de Janeiro while a rival pilot tries to steal the contract, and things only get stranger once the plane is in the air. Before long Joe is lost in the jungle, crossing paths with a tribe of Amazon warriors, remarkably tall pygmies, a pair of hapless explorers and a plot far bigger than a photo shoot.
The humour is broad and fast: wisecracks, running gags, cartoon villains and puzzles that often reward the silliest idea you can think of. It was made by a small team in Australia, John Passfield and Steven Stamatiadis, and it shows the love both had for the classic adventures of the time.
Playing it here
This is the CD "talkie" version 1.1, with every line of dialogue spoken, which the authors released as freeware through the ScummVM project. It runs in ScummVM, compiled for the browser, with the original game file unchanged.
The first load takes a while: the game data is about 51 MB, plus about 6 MB for the engine, and everything downloads before the game starts. A bar shows the progress. Your saved games and settings stay in this browser.
A mouse works best. On a touch screen a tap works as a left click, which is enough for the action panel, but the right-click shortcut is not available.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Left click on an action, then on something | do that action (open, close, move, give, look at, pick up, talk to, use) |
| Left click on the scene | walk there |
| Right click | do the obvious action on what you click, or skip |
| O, C, M, G, L, P, T, U | pick an action from the keyboard |
| 1 to 4, comma and period | pick an inventory item, scroll the inventory |
| Space | skip the current line of dialogue |
| Esc | skip a cutscene or conversation |
| F5 (or F1) | open the journal: save, load, options |
| F11 / F12 | quick save / quick load |
| Ctrl+F5 | ScummVM menu |
A few things worth knowing
The journal is your menu. It sits in the inventory as Joe's notebook, and F5 opens it from anywhere. That is where you save, load and change the options.
Try the ridiculous. This is a cartoon world, and the solution is often the joke. If an item seems useless, try it on everyone.
Look at everything twice. Joe's comments on objects are often funny, and sometimes they are the only hint you get.
Go through every dialogue option. People often say something useful only after the small talk, and some of the best jokes hide in the side questions. A quick save with F11 before a long conversation costs nothing.
