About the game

Flutter By is a small game about a butterfly crossing a meadow. The ground scrolls past from right to left, and every so often a flower grows up from it on a stem of random height. Your job is to fly into the flower heads, which is the only way to top up the butterfly's energy.

The butterfly is not entirely under your control. You decide whether it flaps upward or folds its wings and sinks, but a light breeze nudges it about the whole time. The energy level is the small dot on the top edge of the screen: it creeps to the left as time passes and jumps to the right with every flower reached. The more energy you have, the faster the meadow moves. When the dot reaches the left edge, the butterfly is spent and the game starts again.

Playing it here

Flutter By is a CHIP-8 program. CHIP-8 is a simple virtual machine from 1977, created for hobby computers like the COSMAC VIP, and people still write new games for it. This one targets XO-CHIP, a modern extension with extra colours, more memory and better sound, and was made for Octojam 6, a yearly CHIP-8 game jam. It runs here in the Octo emulator, with the speed and colours chosen for it in the archive.

Click Play and the butterfly takes off after the title appears; there is no start key. F2 saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too: up and down on the D-pad.

Controls

Key Action
W or up arrow flap: the butterfly keeps rising
S or down arrow fold the wings: the butterfly keeps sinking
F2 / F4 save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

There is no neutral. Whatever you pressed last stays in effect, so the butterfly is always either climbing or dropping. Tap between the two to hover at the height you want.

Sinking is faster than rising. Folded wings drop the butterfly twice as fast as flapping lifts it, so start climbing early when a tall flower is coming.

Aim for the blossom. Only the flower head counts, not the stem. Each one gives a good chunk of energy, so a single miss is rarely fatal.
