About the game
The theme of Ludum Dare 57 was "Depths", and instead of diving into caves or oceans, Dimitri Masson decided to explore depth of field, the way a photographer's lens makes only one distance sharp. The scene is a painterly Easter garden: trees in the back, grass with scattered chocolate eggs and wrappers in front, a big broken egg in the middle. Everything is blurred except what lies at the distance where your camera is focused, and moving the mouse moves the focus nearer or farther.
The things to find are listed at the top of the screen as small icons with counters: one rabbit with a single ear, two bluebells, the four letters A, B, L and A, and five ladybugs. Each one is hidden in the picture at its own depth, so it is only sharp when your focus is right. When you see one, click on it to photograph it, and the shutter sound confirms the shot. When the last object has been photographed, the game tells you how long it took.
He made the scene in Blender and gave it a hand-painted look with the Kuwahara filter, and the music was composed in BeepBox. The only sound effect, the camera shutter, is the author's own voice. The story behind the theme is sweet: the game was inspired by his daughter, who loves look-and-find books, and who chose the Easter theme and the palette.
Playing it here
Click Play, wait for the pictures to load (the game has big images, so it can take a moment), and click the title card to begin. The music starts with the game. The online scoreboard of the original is not part of this copy. Nothing is sent anywhere.

A few things worth knowing
Sweep the focus slowly. An object that is out of focus is only a soft blob, so pass through every depth, near to far.
Check the edges. The ladybugs and the letters like to hide in corners and under leaves.
Use the counters. The icons at the top show how many of each object are still missing.
Credits and licence
Focus Hunt was made by Dimitri Masson for Ludum Dare 57 (Compo) and is released under the MIT licence. It uses p5.js 1.11.3 (LGPL-2.1, the Processing Foundation and contributors), served unchanged with its source code hosted next to the game, p5.sound 1.0.1 (MIT) and p5.palette 0.3.0 (MIT). The licence texts are linked from this page. The changes made for this site are: the online leaderboard is removed, the opening card uses the game's own picture instead of a promotional image with the HTML5 logo, and the page that holds the game was rewritten so that nothing is loaded from other sites.
