About the game

Golf is a solitaire with a very simple rule and a surprising amount of thinking in it. Thirty-five cards are dealt face up into seven columns of five, and the rest of the deck waits in the stock, with one card turned up beside it to start the waste pile. On each turn you may take the bottom card of any column and play it onto the waste pile, as long as its rank is one higher or one lower than the card on top. Suits do not matter, and an Ace only links to a Two, there is no wrapping from King to Ace. When nothing fits, you turn up a card from the stock and start again.

The goal is to empty all seven columns. You rarely manage it with the first plan you think of, because the cards you play today decide which ones you can reach tomorrow. Games are short, a few minutes each, and a good deal can be won by looking for the longest chain before you start moving.

This is an HTML5 version by milsaware, written without images: the cards are drawn with CSS and the page runs on plain JavaScript. A bar under the table shows the time and the number of moves.

Playing it here

Click Play. Cards are moved with drag and drop, which works with a mouse and on most laptops with a touchpad; it may not work on a phone or tablet, where browsers do not support HTML5 dragging well. Take the bottom card of a column with the mouse and drop it on the waste pile (the face-up card next to the stock). Click the stock, the pile of backs, to turn up the next card. Press the D key at any time to deal a new game.

A few things worth knowing

Plan the chain. Before you move anything, look at the bottom cards and the waste card and find the longest sequence of plays you can chain together.

Save the right card. A column with two cards of the same rank is a good place to be: one of them can wait for the next turn of the waste pile.

Don't turn the stock too early. Every card you turn up is gone for good, and it is the only way the waste card ever changes.
