Gravity Beam: Master Gaiden

About the game

A terrorist cell has left a nuclear device deep in the caverns of Mars, and only one pilot can get it out. You fly the Greenwing, a small ship that turns and thrusts like the classic cave-flying games: gravity pulls you down, the thrusters push you in the direction you are facing, and momentum does the rest.

Find the crate with the bomb, lock onto it with the gravity beam and carry it back up through the caves and out into space. The beam works like a rope: the crate swings behind the ship, every bump against the rock damages it, and a sharp turn at speed can drag you both into a wall.

The game was made for the SMS Power! coding competition in 2013, with code, graphics, music and even the compression tools by its author.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Master System: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Gearsystem, a Master System emulator compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now, then press Z on the main menu to start.

F2 saves the full state of the emulator in this browser and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Master System button Action
Left / Right D-pad rotate the ship; Up / Down in the menu
X Button 2 hold to fire the thrusters
Z Button 1 engage or release the gravity beam; confirm in the menu
Enter Pause pause and resume
F2 / F4 — save / load the emulator state

The main menu has an option to swap the functions of buttons 1 and 2.

A few things worth knowing

Move slowly. The bomb is fragile: when the crate starts blinking it is damaged, and the faster it blinks the closer it is to exploding.

Get close first. The beam only locks on within about four ship lengths of the crate, and it lets go if the crate swings too far away.

Do not land it on the pad. The goal is to fly out of the caves, through the opening at the top near the start, with the beam still engaged.

Walls are safe for you. The ship is indestructible and stops dead when it touches rock, which is a handy way to brake. Only the crate takes damage.
