About the game
Grow Quickly is an arcade farming game with a ticking clock. Each field is a patch of soil dotted with young plants, surrounded by water and sand. The plants grow on their own, but only if you keep them watered, and once they bear fruit you have to pick it before the crows swoop down and fly off with it.
You get eight fields in a row, each lasting as long as one loop of the music. Picking fruit, watering and getting fruit back from the crows all score points, and between fields your score is checked against a list of bonus prizes: scarecrows that guard part of the field, faster shoes, hardier plants, a bigger watering can that soaks three plants at once, peach trees whose fruit is worth double, and finally a silly "machine gun" that just frightens every crow away. Running out of fields ends the game with a cheerful goodbye.
The game was made in a weekend for Ludum Dare 45, a game-making competition, in October 2019.
Playing it here
Grow Quickly was made for TIC-80, a fantasy console: an imaginary 1980s-style computer with a 240 by 136 screen and 16 colours, for which independent developers write new games. It runs here in the official TIC-80 web player. Click Play and press Z to start the first field.
The game does not save; each session starts from the first field. Esc opens the TIC-80 menu. A gamepad works directly, and on touch screens an on-screen D-pad and buttons appear.

A few things worth knowing
Thirsty plants tell you. A plant that needs water shows a little bubble, and the bubble changes as it gets more desperate. Leave it too long and it withers; face it and press Z to plant a new seedling in its place.
Stand near the crows. Crows only steal ripe fruit, and they flee as soon as you walk close to them. Scaring off a crow that is already carrying fruit makes it let go, and that is worth a few points too.
Ripe fruit does not need water. A plant carrying fruit stops drinking, but it also stops growing until you pick it. Harvest first, and the plant starts on its next fruit while the crows go hungry.
