Humwin & Darbold

About the game

Humwin is a friendly space-exploring robot with a simple job: land on a planet and collect his colleague Darbold, a sampling robot that looks just like him. The trouble is that Darbold is nowhere to be found. The planet is a purple island ringed by bright pink, full of palm-like plants, flowers and creatures that are very interested in anything they can eat, including small robots.

Humwin & Darbold is a short exploration puzzle. You wander the island, watch how the wildlife behaves, pick up the few things you find lying around and try to figure out where your friend went. There are no weapons and no score: the only way forward is to understand what the creatures want. Getting eaten is not the end; Humwin simply gets printed anew and carries on, a little wiser.

Markus Fisch made it for js13kGames 2021, where the whole game, zipped, has to fit in 13 kilobytes; the theme that year was "Space". The scenery is drawn with WebGL from a handful of vector shapes, with its plants and creatures scattered across the island.

Playing it here

This is the original competition build, unchanged. Click Play and tap or click through Humwin's introduction, then start exploring.

The author has said that this version turned out more unforgiving than he intended and that the solution is not made very clear, and he later made a slightly easier post-competition version, which is not the one hosted here. If you get stuck, the tips below give a gentle push without spoiling the ending. There is no save, but a full playthrough is short.

A few things worth knowing

Keep your distance at first. The green creatures chase whatever they notice. Watch them from afar before walking past.

Things you drop are not wasted. Anything you put down on the ground can attract attention, and that can be useful.

Read what Humwin says. When he picks something up, his comment is often a hint about what to do with it.

Search the whole island. Not everything useful is near the landing site, and some of it is easy to overlook among the plants.
