About the game

You used to sit on the Infernal Throne. Now the Demon King has overruled you, thrown you into the depths of the underworld and stripped away your powers, and the only way back up is on foot. Infernal Throne is a metroidvania in miniature: a single connected map of caves and ruins, explored from side to side, where paths you cannot take yet keep reappearing until you have the ability that opens them.

There are four such abilities, which the game calls Aspects, waiting at glowing shrines: a dash, claws that let you cling to and climb walls, a fireball, and wings that give you a second jump in mid-air. Between the shrines lie five regions, from the Crossroads through the Undergrowth, the Boneyard Caverns and the Fields of Mourning up to the Throne Room, guarded by skeleton warriors, spiders that hang from webs, spikes and gates opened by hidden switches. Defeated enemies and treasure chests drop bones, which count as your score; dying sends you back to the last checkpoint and costs half of the bones you carry.

Ariel Wexler made Infernal Throne for js13kGames 2022, whose theme was "Death". The characters are drawn with simple animated vector shapes, and the music, which changes from region to region, is composed by the code itself.

Playing it here

This is the version the author kept improving after the competition, with a second keyboard layout and gamepad support. Click Play, press any key, and wait a few seconds while the game generates its music. You have three hit points, refilled at each checkpoint. Nothing is saved between visits, so a new session starts from the beginning. When you reach the end, the victory screen shows your bones, your time and how many times you died.

A few things worth knowing

Check the map often. Holding the map key shows the whole underworld with a blinking dot where you are, which makes it much easier to find your way back to a wall that looked climbable or a ledge that looked too high.

Go back with new powers. After every shrine, think about which blocked paths the new Aspect might open.

Bank your bones. Since a death halves what you carry, play carefully when you are holding a big pile and look for the next checkpoint.
