About the game
You come to in a round stone cell, looking out through iron bars at a mountain you have never seen before. You have no idea how you got here, and nobody is coming to get you. Island Not Found is a short first-person adventure about getting off that island: find a way out of the cell, then explore the hills, the shore and the strange structures scattered around it, and piece together how to call for help or leave on your own.
There are no enemies and no timer. The puzzles are the physical kind: a key that opens a door, a lever that does something somewhere else, machinery that needs power before it will move. Most of the island is open from the start, so you are free to wander, climb to a high point to get your bearings and come back when you have worked out what a strange structure is for. Some places are pitch dark, and a flashlight helps once you find one.
Ben Clark and Salvatore Previti made it for js13kGames 2020, a competition in which the whole game, zipped, must fit in 13 kilobytes. The theme that year was "404", hence the title. Nothing here is a stored image or sound file: the terrain, the textures, the sky and the music are all generated by code and shaders when the page loads, which is why it takes a few seconds to start.
Playing it here
This is the original competition build, unchanged. Click Play, wait for the island to be generated and choose New Game. Then click inside the game to hand it the mouse; Esc gives the mouse back and opens the menu.
The game draws everything with WebGL 2, so it needs a reasonably recent graphics card and a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox; older Safari versions without WebGL 2 will not run it. It is made for keyboard and mouse and does not work on phones or tablets. The menu has options to invert the mouse, turn off head bob, lower the quality on slower machines and set the music volume.
Save Game in the menu keeps your progress in this browser, and Load Game brings it back later.

A few things worth knowing
Read the captions. When you look at something useful, a line of text at the bottom of the screen tells you what it is and which key to press.
Keep the flashlight handy. Some interiors are completely dark. F toggles the light, so switch it on whenever you step inside somewhere.
Look for what is missing. A machine that will not start or a door that will not open usually means there is something to find elsewhere on the island first.
Save before you wander off. A quick save from the menu costs nothing and lets you try things out.
