About the game

Jarajara is a matching solitaire played with a set of 144 mahjong-style tiles built into a layout. Your job is to clear the layout by removing pairs of tiles with the same face. Only free tiles can be taken: nothing may lie on top of a tile, and its left or right side has to be open. Flowers match any flower and seasons match any season, as in the traditional game.

There are twelve layouts, from the familiar Turtle to Torii, Fuji, Castle, Pagoda, Fortress, Pyramid, Bridge, Butterfly, Dragon, Wall and Palace. Every deal is made so that it can be cleared. Beyond the plain game there are seven challenges: Gold, Spark, Rush, Fortune, Sand, Purge and Blackout, each adding a goal or a clock. Hints, shuffles and undo can be limited or switched off, and Today's game gives everybody the same layout, level and challenge.

Playing it here

Click Play and the layout appears with 144 tiles. Tap a free tile (it is highlighted when "Light the free tiles" is on) and then another free tile with the same face; the pair disappears. The line under the board counts the tiles left and the pairs you can still take. Hint shows a pair, Shuffle reshuffles when you are stuck, Undo takes a move back and Flip turns the layout around. Choose the layout, the challenge, the level (Easy, Medium, Hard), the view and the tile design (the Jarajara set or two riichi sets) in the rows below, and limit the hints, shuffles and undo if you want a stricter game. The Sound button turns the tile clicks on and off.

Controls

Input Action

Hint show a pair you can take
Shuffle reshuffle the tiles left
Undo take back the last pair
Flip turn the layout around

A few things worth knowing

Take from the tall stacks first. Tiles buried under several others are the ones that block you later.

Check all four of a face. Before you take a pair, see whether a third or fourth tile of that face is about to become free.

Try Blackout when you are ready. Only the free tiles show their faces, which trains you to remember the layout.

Questions

Can every deal be cleared? Yes. The deals are built so that a full clearing exists, though Hint and Shuffle can help you find it.

Can I turn the helpers off? Yes. Hints, shuffles and undo can each be limited or removed, and the challenges add goals or a clock.
