About the game

KłełeAtoms is a game of chain reactions. Players take turns placing one atom at a time on a grid, either on an empty tile or on one they already own. When a tile holds too many atoms it becomes critical and explodes: each neighbouring tile gains an atom, and every atom on those tiles switches to the player who caused the explosion.

How many atoms is too many depends on where the tile is: two in a corner, three along an edge and four anywhere else. One explosion can push its neighbours over the limit too, and a single move can set off a cascade that sweeps across the board. A player who loses every atom is out, and the last one standing wins.

This is the Mega Drive version of KłełeAtoms, by the same author. Before playing you can set the grid size (from 5 to 12 tiles wide and 4 to 7 tall) and choose who controls each of the four colours: a person, one of three computer opponents, or nobody.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Mega Drive: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in ClownMDEmu, a Mega Drive emulator compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now, press a button on the title screen and use the menu to set up a match, or open the built-in tutorial.

Matches against computer opponents work best here. With "Use multiple controllers" off, several people can also take turns on the same keyboard. The pause menu can save a match in the cartridge's battery memory, which this site keeps in your browser automatically. F2 also saves the full state of the emulator and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

F2 / F4 — save / load the emulator state

A few things worth knowing

Corners explode first. A corner tile needs only two atoms, so it is the quickest way to start a chain, and also the easiest place to lose atoms.

Look one explosion ahead. Before placing an atom next to a tile that is about to blow, count what your move will trigger. Feeding an opponent's chain reaction is the classic mistake.

Start with the tutorial. It walks through the rules in a few pages; the right and left arrows turn them.

Try different grid sizes. Small grids make for short, explosive matches; the largest ones reward planning.
