About the game

Lassie is a cowgirl in a white hat standing at the bottom of a sandy field, and waves of outlaws are coming at her from the top: red-hatted gunmen, lanky cowboys and sombrero-wearing banditos, all shooting back. She can move around the field with the arrow keys and has two actions. Z fires a bullet straight up the field. X throws a lasso, which catches an enemy and ropes him instead of killing him.

That is where the idea of the game lies. Every enemy you rope joins your reserve, which is shown by three counters at the bottom right, one for each kind: outlaws, cowboys and banditos. You start with two of each, and you can hold up to nine. Press 1, 2 or 3 and one of them appears near you in blue and fights on your side, up to six at a time, which can turn a lost wave around. Lassie is frozen for a moment each time she fires or throws, so every action is a small risk.

When all of Lassie's lives are gone, "Game Over" shows up, and Z starts the next game. The game is a small, fast fight with a chunky, low-resolution look, set to a looping tune and with simple sound effects for the shots, the lasso and the spawning of your friends.

Lasso Lassie was made by Cong (cxong) for the Wild West Jam, a game jam about the Old West.

Playing it here

Click Play and, once the title card shows, press Z to start. The game needs the keyboard: the arrow keys, Z, X and the number keys 1 to 3. The title appears after a short loading screen, so give it a moment. Nothing is installed or sent anywhere, and the original version's online leaderboard is not part of this copy.

Controls

Key Action
Arrow keys move Lassie
Z start the game; fire a bullet
X throw the lasso
1, 2, 3 call in an outlaw, a cowboy or a bandito from your reserve

A few things worth knowing

Rope the dangerous ones. A rope costs more time than a bullet, but the enemy you catch becomes a friend that you can call back later.

Do not burn your reserve early. You can have only six friends on the field at once, and they are most useful when the wave is already big.

Moving is how you survive. Lassie cannot move for a moment after shooting or roping, so choose a safe spot before you act.

Credits and licence

Its other graphics and sounds are CC0, apart from three pieces credited by the author: the UI pieces by Buch and the crosshair by para (both CC0), and the sand texture by Beast (also known as MrBeast), made for OpenGameArt.org and published as "Desert Tileset" under CC BY 3.0. The text is set in VT323 by Peter Hull (SIL Open Font License 1.1). It runs on the Phaser 2.4.6 game library (MIT, Photon Storm Ltd). The licence texts are linked from this page. The changes made for this site are: the Game Jolt scoring code (which would have contacted gamejolt.com) is removed, and the title in the opening card, which was a logo made with an online tool that has no licence, is replaced by the same words written in VT323.
