About the game

You play Lydia, who decides to teach herself programming and to land a job as a developer. The game opens with a job interview, with questions you answer as you like, and then settles into a visual novel with a calendar: every day you choose how to spend your time. You can study, practise with quiz questions, visit a hacker space, pour coffee as a barista, see your family or chat with friends, and each choice changes how your knowledge, your savings and your friendships grow. A cat called Mint lives in the story too.

Along the way the story throws in more than a thousand computer science questions, from HTML and CSS to algorithms and Git, a small shop where you spend your money on gadgets for the room and treats for the cat, a pong match, a rhythm minigame and dozens of achievements to unlock. According to the authors there are six different endings, and not all of them end with you as a developer.

The tone is warm and encouraging. The writing treats learning to code as something slow, a bit awkward and perfectly possible, and the characters you meet are the kind of people who would actually help you.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait while the game loads. The engine and the story script are about 40 MB and come first; the pictures and the music are fetched only when the game needs them, so the first minutes use less data than the whole game. After two short information screens you reach the main menu. Choose New Game, type a name and the interview begins.

You can save at any time with the Save button at the bottom of the screen (there are nine pages of slots) and come back with Continue or Load Game. Saves are stored in this browser, so they stay on this computer, and clearing the site data erases them.

The game is long, with hours of reading, so it is a good one to play in short sessions. Skipping text only works on lines you have already read.

Controls

Input Action
Click, Space or Enter advance the dialogue
Click on a choice pick it (some choices are timed)
Ctrl (hold) skip text you have already read
Esc open the game menu (save, load, settings, bonus)
Mouse wheel up roll back to the previous line
H hide the interface to see the picture
Bottom bar Back, History, Skip, Auto, Save and Settings

Tips

Save before big choices. The story branches on what you learn, what you spend and who you spend time with, and the alternative endings need different paths. A second save slot costs nothing.

Use the Bonus menu. It holds a quiz practice mode with spaced repetition, the list of achievements and a music room with all the soundtrack.

Read the choices. A few of them are timed, and the silly option is sometimes the one that unlocks an achievement.

FAQ

Do I need to know how to code? No. The game starts at zero and the quizzes explain every answer.

Is it in English only? Yes, the story and the quiz questions are in English. Only this page is translated.

Does it work on a phone? It loads, but this page is made for a computer: the game screen is wide, the text is small and some minigames expect a keyboard.

Does the game collect data or open other sites? No. This edition has no links, no donation or rating prompts and makes no requests outside this site.
