About the game

A king with a big smile and a fluffy dog ask you for a favour: could you fit all of this text on that parchment? The text is a stack of words on the left, each one a strip of letter tiles, and the parchment is a small grid of empty squares on the right. The words come from the opening line of a famous medieval charter, starting with a king's name and a long list of his titles and the people he is writing to.

Your job is to drag each word onto the parchment so that everything fits. Words are allowed to cross and overlap, but only the way they do in a crossword or in Scrabble: where two words share a square, they must share the same letter. Words can be turned sideways, which is how most of them end up fitting. Because there is only one set of words, there is no deck, no clock and no way to lose; it is simply a packing puzzle and you decide when you are done.

A counter on the parchment shows how much of the text you have placed, as a percentage, and a score that rewards words that overlap well and leave free squares around them. The king cheers you on with short comments, and the dog peeks in when you do something good.

Antti Haavikko made Magna Carta for js13kGames 2023, where the whole game, zipped, had to fit in 13 kilobytes. The theme that year was Old Technology.

Playing it here

Click Play, then click the game once to dismiss the king's greeting. Press and drag a word from the list onto the parchment. Right-click while you hold the word, or press Space if your mouse has no right button, to turn it. Drop it where it fits. You can pick placed words up again to move them. The game is made for a 4:3 window. Nothing is saved.

A few things worth knowing

Start with the long words. A word like the longest titles is hard to place late, when only short gaps are left. Put the big ones down first and fill the spaces around them.

Look for shared letters. Words only overlap where the letters match, so scan for shared vowels and common letters to make crossings.

Rotate to fit. Many words only fit once they are turned; try both directions before you move something else.
