About the game
Mahjong solitaire is the one-player game where a pile of tiles is stacked in a pattern and you remove them two at a time. A tile is free when nothing lies on top of it and it has an open left or right side; pick two free tiles with the same picture and they disappear. Clear all 144 and you win, get stuck with no pairs left and you lose.
Mah is a free, open-source version of it that runs entirely in your browser. It comes with 84 layouts, from the traditional turtle to animals, buildings, shapes and plants, and a random-board generator that can be given a seed so that you and a friend can play the same board. Three difficulty levels decide which helpers you get: in easy mode you have hints, undo, shuffle and a rescue shuffle that keeps the board solvable, in standard mode hint and undo, and in expert mode nothing at all.
There is a daily challenge, the same board and rules for everyone on a given day, with a streak and a calendar of past results; a set of challenge types such as timed runs and score hunts; a layout editor to draw your own boards; and a zen mode that hides the controls. You can change the tile art, the colour theme, the background, switch to 3D tiles and shadows, and read the interface in 40 languages. The game auto-saves in your browser.
It is made by one developer and published under the MIT licence: no ads, no tracking, no account.
Playing it here
Click Play and the game loads in the page (about 6 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). On the first visit you can take a short tutorial or skip it; then choose a board in the New Game window and press Play. In this version the tile sets and backgrounds with a free licence are included: Riichi, Riichi 2, Birds, Space, Uni and Black & White for tiles, and clouds, bamboo and a collection of patterns for backgrounds. Your settings, best times and the current game are kept in your browser.

Tips
Start with the tiles that block the most. Free the tiles at the ends of the long rows and the top of tall stacks first; a tile that is covered and has a neighbour on both sides can stay locked for a long time.
Look for the last pair of a kind. If only two tiles of a picture remain, make sure removing other tiles does not leave them stuck under each other.
Use the rescue tools in easy mode. Hint shows a free pair, and the shuffle can break a deadlock; the standard and expert modes are for when you want more of a challenge.
Try a daily challenge. It is a short, shared puzzle with its own rules, and a good way to learn the variants.
FAQ
Is my game saved? Yes, in your browser on this device only; nothing is sent anywhere.
Why are some tile sets missing compared with the original? Some of the sets and backgrounds in the author's version are not under a free licence that allows this site to host them, so they were taken out. Six tile sets and four kinds of background remain.
Does it work on a phone? Yes. Tap to pick tiles, drag to move the board and pinch to zoom; in portrait the board can be rotated to fit wide layouts.
Is it free to share? Yes. The code is MIT, the artwork is under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 or public domain, and the patterns are MIT; the details are below.
