About the game
Midnight Paws is a stealth game about being small. It is almost midnight, rain is falling and lightning now and then lights up the sky. You are a mouse, and somewhere in each backyard there is a hole that leads to the next one. The problem is the black cat, which walks the garden, watches from the fence and will chase you the moment it spots you.
You win by being quiet and hiding. Bushes are your friend: stay under one and the cat loses interest in you. Your steps make noise, and some ground is noisier than other ground, so a careful route often beats a dash across open grass. Watch the fence as well: if the cat shows up on top of it, it is about to jump down and go for the mouse. When you find the hole, you move on to a new backyard, and the backyards keep coming, each with a different layout. The game counts how many you manage to reach.
The game was made for js13kGames 2025 by Frost Sun, the team of Tero Jäntti and Sami Heikkinen, for a competition where the whole game has to fit in 13 KB and the theme was "Black cat". Everything is drawn by code on a canvas, and the sound effects and music were made for the game.
Playing it here
Click Play, then press Enter on each opening screen until you are standing in the first alley. Use the arrow keys or W A S D to move the mouse. The sound is on, so check the volume, and note that the screen flashes white with the lightning now and then. Your best number of backyards is kept in your browser. The game has no touch controls, so it is best on a computer with a keyboard.

A few things worth knowing
Hide in the bushes. If the cat is after you, getting under a bush makes it lose interest. Plan a route from bush to bush.
Watch the fence. A cat on top of the fence is about to leap, so do not be in the open when it appears.
Mind the ground. Some surfaces are noisier under your paws than others, and the cat listens, so choose where you step.
