Mochi and the Midnight Escape

About the game

Mochi is a black cat locked up in a hostile place, and the only cover she has is the dark. Each level is a small cell of platforms, and every one of them is a puzzle as much as a jump: red levers decide which electric fields are live, water and spikes take half a heart in a blink, and springs launch you to ledges that look too high.

You are not armed. What you do have is patience and the habit of the guards. Drones and sweepers patrol on their own routes and chase you, but they are just as vulnerable to electricity and water as you are, so the clean way to deal with one is to walk it into a trap and step aside. You start with nine half-hearts; when they are gone, the level restarts.

To leave a level you must pick up every coin, and some doors want a key first. Then look for the chequered flag. Mochi and the Midnight Escape was made for js13kGames 2025, on the theme Black Cat, by Jasper Renow-Clarke, who goes by picosonic.

A few things worth knowing

Watch the levers. A red lever flips a field of electricity on or off, and it flips for the guards too. Pulling one at the right moment is the best weapon in the game.

Do not rush the coins. The finish only counts once every coin is in your pocket, so scan the whole screen before you commit to a jump you cannot undo.

Springs are for exploring. A bounce often looks like a mistake until you notice the ledge above it.
