About the game

A sentient planet is minding its own business, floating among the stars, when some people who did not get the memo arrive to spoil its quiet stargazing. Moon Slinger is a small arcade defence game: you are the planet, and your only weapon is the moons that orbit around you. Rockets, flying saucers and space rocks come in from every side, and the way to deal with them is to swing your satellites into them.

The trick is in how you move. The satellites trail behind the planet on a tether, so steering the planet in small circles whips them round and round like a slingshot. Before each run you choose what hangs from your build screen: there is a small moon, a heavy moon and more slots to unlock as you play, and every kind of satellite behaves a little differently. Enemies explode in puffs of colour and add to the score in the corner, and a thin ring around your planet is its shield, which the hazards chip away at until you are out.

It started as the studio's entry for Ludum Dare 38 and was later ported to the Godot engine and published as free, open-source software with a few additions: score feedback, adjustable audio, configurable controls and a mouse- only way to move.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait a moment while the game loads (about 14 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). Click inside the game once so that it receives the keyboard. From the menu choose Play, pick your satellites on the build screen and press Play again. Instructions in the menu shows the same controls as below.

There are no save slots. The game can be played with the keyboard, the mouse or a gamepad.

Controls

Input Action
W, A, S, D or the arrow keys move the planet
Right mouse button (hold) move the planet toward the pointer
Left mouse button or Space shoot (once unlocked)
Esc or P pause

Tips

Think in small circles. Wide sweeps launch your satellites too far away. Tiny loops keep them close and fast.

Keep the shield up. Hits drain the ring around the planet. Back away from a big group instead of trying to bash through all of it.

Mix your moons. The small moon and the heavy moon behave differently, so try both and see which suits your style when more slots open up.

Mind the lasers. Some ships fire from a distance. Move across the line of fire rather than away from it.
